FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of identification is needed for a notarization?

There are many forms of identification that are considered acceptable in the state of Florida. The ID should be current, and have a signature with a photo and physical description. This includes government issued IDs such as a drives license from the US, a US territory, Canada, or Mexico; a state ID from either Florida or any other state; a US passport, or a passport issued by a foreign government that has been stamped by the Department of Justice; a military ID; and an inmate identification card. In the event that a signer does not have one of these options, credible witnesses can be used to determine identity, or a sworn statement from a law enforcement officer.

What kind of documents can be notarized?

The number of documents that can be notarized is almost endless. It would be easier to discuss which documents cannot be notarized so let's start there. Vital records cannot be notarized. This includes marriage, birth, and death certificates, or the copies of these certificates. A notary should also not notarize a document that is incomplete or unsigned. The most common documents that are notarized include real estate documents; estate plan documents (wills, trusts), power of attorney; adoption documents; contracts; affidavits, etc..
